In short

“Better Training for Safer Food” (BTSF) is an initiative of the European Commission with the aim to organise and implement training activities on sampling and analytical methods for official food and feed controls. Sciensano contributes to this objective by providing technical knowledge and hands-on training on analytical techniques for mycotoxins. The aim is to support developing countries on safety issues for the consumption and import of foodstuffs in the EU. As such, this training activity is mainly addressed to staff of competent authorities and laboratory technicians.

Project description

The BTSF training programme on mycotoxins is predominantly designed to familiarise third countries and in particular developing countries with EU standards and import requirements. For this purpose legislation is presented and topics of particular relevance are carefully discussed in detail according to the following categories:

  • Sampling including storage, transport and traceability of samples
  • Sample preparation and purification
  • Screening methods
  • Confirmatory techniques
  • Laboratory techniques
  • Quality in analytical laboratories

The methodology is based on a participatory and practical approach with strong emphasis on exercises, case studies, on-site visits, multiple choice questions, debates, video modules and hands-on practical laboratory work to stimulate exchanges of points of view and experiences between participants.
