GP Infection barometer [1]

Project duration:

Project with no end date

In short

The General Practitioners Infection Barometer, a surveillance of consultations with GPs for infectious diseases, started in October 2024. This surveillance strengthens the monitoring of infectious diseases and allows us to be better prepared for potential new epidemics.

Project description

This surveillance of general practitioner consultations for infectious diseases is an extension of the COVID-19 General Practitioners Barometer and collects data fully automatically from the electronic medical record. The surveillance covers several infectious diseases (respiratory and gastrointestinal infections, vaccine-preventable diseases, and sexually transmitted infections, as well as certain infections for which there are not yet good data sources in Belgium, such as scabies).
The national results of the Infection Barometer provide the commissioning bodies (the regional and federal health authorities) with timely important information on the spread of infectious diseases. This enables them to make informed decisions and prepare for future epidemics.
Participating general practitioners receive not only the national results but also their own practice results. This allows them to closely monitor a range of infectious diseases within their practice and region and to observe their impact on their practice.
