In short

The JA eCAN Plus project aims to enhance the digital capabilities of cancer centres across Europe, with a particular attention paid to opportunities in Eastern Europe. Coordinated by Sciensano, this 4-year initiative brings together 81 partners from 23 European countries — including public health institutes, universities, hospitals, cancer centres, and patient associations — building on the achievements of the previous JA eCAN project.

Project description

Cancer is one of the most pressing health issues that poses a large burden on society, governments, and healthcare systems. It is the second leading cause of mortality in most EU Member States and without strong action, cancer incidence in Europe is expected to increase by a fifth by 2040, which translates into more than 5 million new cancer cases each year.

The implementation of digital tools such as telemedicine applications into healthcare systems offers a new window of opportunity for responding to population health crises, as seen during the COVID-19 pandemic. The JA eCAN Plus aims to bring the benefits of digital health to all citizens, patients and health care professionals (HCPs) to improve cancer prevention and care across Europe. Sciensano takes on the coordination of the joint action, involving 23 European countries and 81 key partners working in public health institutes, universities, hospitals, cancer centres and patient associations. Building on the work of the previous JA eCAN, the project focuses on:

  • Implementing a comprehensive training program for the development of digital skills relevant to telemedicine, remote monitoring and e-health tools in the prevention context among HCPs, patients, and the general public
  • Enhancing digital collaboration within and between cancer centres
  • Implementing telemedicine tools into different settings of cancer care to explore various clinical applications of these tools
  • Bolstering preparedness for the implementation of the European Health Data Space.

JA eCAN Plus will develop a framework for health data exchanges and increased telemedicine capacity across cancer centres in Europe. Pilots and user cases will allow us to test the integration of digital tools in a safe and secure manner complying with all applicable EU regulations. Results will inform policy and practice with the aim to improve the care and the quality of life of cancer patients.
