Numbers

Data on the epidemiological situation of bartonellosis in Belgium are presented in annual reports (only available in Dutch and French), see below under ‘Other publications’.

In Belgium, cat scratch disease (Bartonella henselae) mainly occurs in children and young adults, with typically more cases during fall and winter. The number of cases reported in Wallonia is usually 2 to 3 times higher than in Flanders and 2 times higher than in Brussels

Sciensano is responsible for the epidemiological surveillance of bartonellosis in Belgium. For this purpose, we collect data via various surveillance systems. These enable us to describe the occurrence of the disease, to follow trends over time and to identify possible risk factors for infection.
