Coronaviruses (CoV) are a large family of viruses that cause diseases, ranging from the common cold to serious diseases such as MERS-CoV (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome) and SARS-CoV (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome). Coronaviruses are zoonotic, which means that they are transmitted between animals and humans.
The coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 (previously called 2019-nCoV), causes the illness Covid-19 and is a new strain that was not yet identified in humans before. It was first reported in Wuhan, China, on 31 December 2019, hence its original name 2019-nCoV.
