Dr. Gaëtan De Gryse DVM
Head NRL BVD, IBR, SRLV, Peste des petits ruminants, and Bovine leukosis
Gaëtan De Gryse graduated as a veterinarian from Ghent University in 2015, immediately thereafter, he embarked on his academic journey as a PhD-student under Professor Hans Nauwynck, Professor Nico Boon and Professor Peter Bossier, unravelling the pathogenesis of the white spot syndrome virus in shrimp. More specifically he elaborated on finding the portal of entry and the conditions needed to facilitate that pathogen entry. He also provided totally new insight on the shrimps anatomy, morphology and the moulting process.
Next, in 2021, he assumed the position of head of the national reference laboratory for enzootic viral diseases in Ruminants in Belgium (Sciensano). Infectious bovine rhinotracheitis virus (BoHV-1), bovine viral diarrhoea virus (BVDV), Enzootic bovine leukosis virus (BLV), small ruminant lenti viruses (SRLV), and peste des petits ruminants (PPRV). For these viruses, he and his team are responsible for the control of the quality of diagnostics via kit certification, batch controls, organising proficiency testing, collecting providing reference material, improvement of existing tests, and troubleshooting problems in the field. Additionally he provides scientific expertise for the eradication, control or monitoring effort of these diseases and the devising of new national legislation. Recently he became involved in the effort to better understand the H5N1-infections in cattle and added Influenza D to his set of activities. During his time at Sciensano, he is or was involved in the following externally funded research projects: Cross-IBR, Milk-IBR, INVAZIV, MicroVeD and Snapshot IBR.
