Test description

Enterovirus PCR: RNA extraction followed by in-house real-time PCR and sequencing. 

Purpose of the test

Detection of poliovirus in stool and other clinically relevant samples.

Criteria for performing this test in the context of reference activities

•    Suspected poliovirus infection
•    Acute flaccid paralysis

Instructions for samples 

In every case of acute flaccid paralysis and/or suspected polio, two stool samples must be taken at a minimum interval of 24 hours, within 14 days of the onset of symptoms. These must be sent to the NRC in Leuven. Every case of acute flaccid paralysis must be reported.

Storage:

•    Maximum 24 hours at room temperature
•    Maximum 10 days at 2-8°C

Transport:

Send refrigerated (2-8°C) with a maximum transport time of 48 hours

Unacceptable requests

  • Insufficient sample
  • Incorrect transport or storage
  • Application form not fully completed
  • Sample is not suitable for analysis 

Turn around time (and frequency of analysis) 

  • Frequency of analysis: every working day, during duty hours
  • Response time < 8 hours

Reporting of test results

Results according to the requesting laboratory or physician’s wishes will be sent via email and/or fax.
