High-risk groups

The use of a condom is essential to protect yourself and your partners against STDs. If you have any concerns, you should have an STD screening test. In the event of an infection, make sure you follow the correct treatment and inform your sexual partners.

Behaviour that favours the transmission of gonorrhea

The transmission of STDs can generally be linked to certain types of behaviour:

  • having sexual intercourse without using a condom
  • having sexual intercourse with an infected partner.

People who are sexually active aged between 20 to 34 and in particular men, are most affected by gonorrhea.

Sciensano publishes two reports each year documenting the evolution of STDs in Belgium. The reports are based on data-collection networks.
