Since 2010, Sciensano is involved in the pluri-institutional Health System Performance Assessment project, together with the Belgian Health Care Knowledge Centre and the National Institute for Health and Disability Insurance. Every 3-4 years, they perform a check-up of the entire Belgian health system. Sciensano contributes to the selection of the indicators and edits the chapters on preventive health care, health status, health determinants, and equity.
In order to do so, Sciensano collects data from the general population through the Health Interview Survey, about, amongst others: health care use, unmet medical needs, medication consumption, preventive care, patient experience and patient satisfaction. Sciensano also monitors the incidence of infectious diseases in the general population and at hospital level. In addition, we also asses the whole disease management of some chronic diseases (such as diabetes).
