Ann Packeu obtained her PhD in Bioscience Engineering in 2010 at the Free University of Brussels (VUB). In 2010 she started her career at Sciensano (formerly the Scientific Institute of Public Health) as scientific collaborator for the Mycology & Aerobiology Service. In 2014 she became the responsible for the Medical Mycology unit and head of the Service in 2020.
Her main research area is the identification, taxonomy and molecular epidemiology of dermatophytes. In addition, the Medical Mycology unit is responsible for the surveillance of tinea capitis outbreaks in school children in Belgium and has a long expertise in the detection of nosocomial fungal infections.
Currently, she is investigating the link between the use of tri-azole antifungals in the Belgian environment and the emergence of resistant Aspergillus fumigatus isolates in humans and animals.
