In short

The Laboratory of Medical Microbiology (LMM) is recognized by the RIZIV/INAMI (Belgium’s National Institute for Health Disability Insurance) as a laboratory for medical analyses, specialized in microbiology, infectious serology and molecular biology. The laboratory is also accredited by BELAC, Belgium’s accreditation organisation, according to the ISO15189 standard.

The clinical biologists of the LMM are responsible for the medical authorisation of test orders and clinical indications of tests, they monitor the quality control in collaboration with scientists and optimize the clinical interpretation  of reported results to clinicians, provide medical advice and clinical validation of laboratory tests, provide medical collaboration for requesting doctors, maintain medical contacts with the communities for critical clinical cases of infectious diseases and provide expert advice to the ICT team.

Project description

The Laboratory of Medical Microbiology (LMM) is recognized by the RIZIV/INAMI (Belgium’s National Institute for Health Disability Insurance) as a laboratory for medical analyses, specialized in microbiology, infectious serology and molecular biology. The laboratory is also accredited by BELAC, Belgium’s accreditation organisation, according to the ISO15189 standard.

Phases of laboratory tests:

Preanalytical phase:

  • Update of the test orders and the clinical indications of the tests
  • Update sampling modality

Analytical phase:

  • Collaboration with the scientists for the analytical phase and exchange with the scientific evidence based information in order to improve the analytical methods
  • Continue medico-scientific communication
  • Monitoring of the quality control

Postanalytical phase:

  • Medical advice and clinical validation of laboratory tests
  • Medical collaboration with the requesting doctors
  • Medical contact with communities for the critical clinical cases of the infectious diseases

Expert advice for the ICT development team:

  • MyCareNet (RIZIV reimbursement)
  • E-health (results report transmission)
  • STARLIMS (Laboratory Information Management System)

Added scientific value:
Most of the analyses within the LMM are specific and cannot be performed in a general clinical laboratory. These performances demand a specific expertise.  The clinical biologists of the LMM are constantly developing this expertise to support their clinical colleagues.

Added human and/or veterinary value:
The analyses that we provide are specific and of crucial clinical and epidemiological importance. It is of the utmost importance to maintain this structure within every European country to exert control over infectious diseases.
