In short
The EUNETCCC is an initiative that aims at establishing and developing the European Network of Comprehensive Cancer Centres (EU CCCs), enhancing capacities in research, care, governance, innovation, prevention, and education. These objectives will be achieved by engaging and cooperating with key stakeholders and patients. The expected impact of this project includes:
- Elevating Quality of Cancer Care
- Integrating Patient Mobility into Access
- Strengthening Research, Innovation, and Prevention Capacities
- Structuring Professional Links at Multiple Levels
- Reinforcing Synergies in the European Cancer Ecosystem
- Boosting Global Capacity and Leadership
Sciensano is highly involved in different tasks and multiple Work Packages (WP) such as:
- Co-leading WP 1 in management and coordination of the project
- Supporting WP 2, 8 and 9
- Leading WP 4 about sustainability in which we:
- Develop a sustainability strategy for EUnetCCC
- Compile pilots and use case insights
- Developing new CCCs and transitioning existing centres to CCCs
- Establish connections with major European health initiatives
Project description
Comprehensive Cancer Centres (CCCs) are at the forefront of cancer research, treatment, and education. Their multidisciplinary approach ensures that patients benefit from the latest scientific advancements, from early detection to innovative treatments and post-treatment care. The establishment of the European Comprehensive Cancer Centre (EUCCC) network represents a harmonised and integrated approach to cancer care across the continent. This initiative is rooted in the principles of excellence and collaboration.
As a follow-up project to CRANE: Joint Action on Network of Comprehensive Cancer Centres, the primary objective of the EU CCC network is to create a cohesive and integrated consortium of CCCs across Europe to ensure that 90% of eligible patients, regardless of their location, have access to high-quality care. This network also serves as a platform for collaboration, allowing Centres to share and develop together best practices, resources, and knowledge. Such collaboration is essential in promoting research, integrating the latest findings into clinical care, and ensuring that patients benefit from the most effective treatments available. The network will facilitate the adoption of quality diagnostic and treatment methods, including training, research and clinical trials across the EU. It should contribute to:
- reducing inequalities of diagnosis, treatment and care, and access to clinical trials;
- strengthening the quality of outcomes research;
- integrating clinical care and research and evaluating the quality of cancer care throughout.
This European collaboration will improve patients’ access to high-quality diagnostics, care and innovative treatments by striving for the following operational objectives:
- Develop a sustainability strategy for EUnetCCC, informed by pilot and use case insights, and compile a detailed report to outline the strategic path and sustainability measures
- Conduct pilots to test various CCC models, assessing their adaptability and effectiveness across Member States. This includes:
- Developing new CCCs and transitioning existing centers to CCCs.
- Piloting local and regional CCC networks for broader integration.
- Tailoring approaches for small Member States through national networks.
- Creating national networks to form CCC-compliant structures.
- Supporting Member States with National Study Groups to ease the EUnetCCC transition
- Establish connections with major European health initiatives to enhance EUnetCCC’s integration and impact (and create links to international and European initiatives like JANE, ERNs and other EBCP programs).
