WGS - MultiLocus Sequence Typing (WGS-MLST)

Last updated on 4-3-2025 by Amber Van Laer

Test description

  • Molecular typing of enterococci via whole genome sequencing (WGS) of enterococci. Based on the sequences obtained, the MLST type is determined.
  • Characterisation in depth is done using the core genome in combination with epidemiological data.

Purpose of test WGS

Determination of sequence type and clonal relatedness

Criteria for performing this test

  • See identification enterococci
  • More than 1 strain must be available and suspected outbreak only after contact with reference centre (referentiecentrum@uza.be).
  • Suitable samples
  • Clean culture on plate with individual colonies

Instructions for transport

See identification enterococci

Unacceptable requests

  • No clean culture
  • Incomplete request form

Turn around time and frequency of analysis

  • Analysis frequency: Per complete run unless outbreak (contact NRC if outbreak)
  • Turn around time: contact the reference centre
