Sweeteners are substances that are added to foods to give them a sweet taste. Before authorising their marketing, the safety of sweeteners is evaluated.

What does Sciensano do?

Each member state of the European Union must monitor the intake of food additives in their own country, to ensure that the ADI is not exceeded.

At the request of the Federal Public Service Health, Sciensano has conducted a study into the total intake of sweeteners in the diet of the Belgian population.

The purpose of the study is to investigate whether the Belgian adult population risks exposure to quantities of sweeteners that exceed the Acceptable Daily Intake.
