Drug market

The drug market is rapidly evolving and represents a growing threat to the health, safety and security of citizens. Policy makers need accurate and up-to-date information to recognise and respond to the wide-ranging impact of the drug market on society.

Close monitoring of changes in:

  • price
  • purity
  • the sources available to obtain the drugs
  • production sites
  • dumping sites
  • drug trafficking
  • seizures

is crucial to assess the accessibility and availability of drugs in the country. In order to support policy responses, Sciensano’s Unit Illicit drugs works in collaboration with the federal police to collect and analyse this data and to provide policy makers and other stakeholders working in the field of drugs with evidence-based information.

Please visit our Unit Illicit drugs pagefor more information about our work on drug-related monitoring, research and support to policymakers.

Sciensano collects and analyses data on the different types of drugs, the patterns of drug use, harms, health and social responses, the drug market and the regulations and policies implemented with regard to drugs in Belgium.
